Software vs. Services
Data backup solutions range from cheaper backup software to more expensive online backup services. Below you can find a comparison of the most popular two data backup options, including their advantages and disadvantages.
Backup Software
Backup software is a less convenient but a more affordable data backup solution. This option will require you to choose and purchase a suitable software application, choose and purchase the removable media that you will use for storing your data, and performing manual backups as often as you need to. The most notable problem is that you will have to manually connect the backup media to your computer, which may get old for many people. And if you skip your routine backups (preferably, daily), then you are not really protected. However, there is also an option to schedule automatic backups, with your backup media constantly connected to (or inserted into) your computer.
What types of removable media can you use for your backups? The choice of the media is entirely up to you, and will probably depend on the size of your files, as well as your personal preferences. If you have a small amount of files to backup, or if you are unsure how to use external drives, you will probably be fine with some CDs or DVDs. The options you can choose from include: CD/DVD, flash, external hard drive, and so on. Alternatively, you can use a remote FTP server, such as your web hosting account.
Backup Services
Backup software is a more convenient but a more expensive data backup solution. You will need to create an account with your service provider, download and run their backup application, and perform an initial backup. Next, you will have to schedule your routine backups (e.g., daily), and you are done. Provided that you have an Internet connection, your data will be regularly and automatically backed up to secure remote servers. The only disadvantage of this method is the monthly fees that you will incur (approximately $10.00 per 1GB of space per month).
Data backup solutions offer diverse options to choose from for protecting your computer from any loss of data.
